Il Miles Davis Quintet fu uno dei gruppi jazz più influenti degli anni ’50 e ’60. La prima formazione (1955) includeva John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers e Philly Joe Jones. Negli anni ’60 il secondo quintetto, con Wayne Shorter e Herbie Hancock, innovò il jazz modale e post-bop con grande libertà espressiva.
