Powerful, moving, inspired, and elegant are just a few of the words commonly used to describe Cheryl Porter, an international recording and singing artist. A refined performer, she has performed on stages in over 15 countries and released 14 albums, distinguishing herself for her ability to transform every musical style into a unique and personal experience.
With a rich, powerful voice deeply rooted in the "Spirituals" tradition, her albums span gospel, jazz, folk, inspirational, and classical music. Through expressive and heartfelt interpretations, her captivating voice touches the soul of every listener. Cheryl is a storyteller: she takes you on an emotional journey, unveiling her soul and sharing her secrets.
Cheryl's musical journey began in 1990, when she auditioned for Northern Illinois University School of Music as a joke. However, the joke turned serious when the university, impressed by her talent, offered her a full scholarship to study opera. Surprised, Cheryl accepted the scholarship and began classical vocal training under the guidance of renowned soprano Dr. Edna Williams and Grammy-nominated bass Myron Myers.
Her musical interests broadened, however, after the great jazz educator and trumpeter Ron Modell discovered that her musical talents extended far beyond classical music. In 1998, Cheryl was recruited as lead vocalist for the prestigious Northern Illinois University Jazz Ensemble, one of the top college jazz bands in the United States, known for collaborations with Quincy Jones, Clark Terry, Louis Bellson, Mel Tormé, James Moody, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington. For two years, Cheryl toured across America with jazz legends such as Tito Puente, Marshall Royal, Paquito D'Rivera, Claudio Roditi, Dennis DiBlasio, Bob Mintzer of the Yellowjackets, Hal Crook, the Brecker Brothers, and other jazz greats.
Today Cheryl Porter lives in Europe and continues to inspire audiences around the world. She has shared the stage with stars such as Bono of U2, Andrea Bocelli, Mariah Carey, Dave Brubeck, Paolo Conte, Katia Ricciarelli, David Crosby, Take 6, and the Blues Brothers 2000, and was invited to perform at the wedding of the world's greatest tenor, Luciano Pavarotti, in 2003.
CDs recorded by Cheryl include: “In the Spirit” , “Best Loved Spirituals” , “Mina in Black” , “Cheryl Porter and The Gospel Train” , “Cheryl Porter Sings Best Loved Gershwin” , “Cheryl Porter Classic Blues” , “These Foolish Things” , “Cheryl Porter Christmas” , “Music in the Air” , “Simply Cheryl” , “Falling In Love” , “Jazz Christmas” , “IGM Live in Chicago” and “What's Going On” , the latter nominated as the best live recording of the year by Live Music Magazine in 2002.
