Fricsay: Mozart — Symphonies Nos. 39, 40 & 41 “Jupiter”

The final three symphonies of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart occupy a central place in the discography of Ferenc Fricsay. In this Capsa Symphōnĭa edition he conducts the Wiener Symphoniker in Symphonies Nos. 39, 40 and 41 “Jupiter”.

Recordings

Symphonies Nos. 39 and 40 were recorded at the Musikverein in Vienna on 29 November 1959, while Symphony No. 41 “Jupiter” dates from 25 March 1961.

Fricsay’s Mozart is shaped by clarity of orchestral texture, controlled phrasing and close attention to form.

Original label and publication

All three performances belong to the historical Deutsche Grammophon catalogue. Symphonies Nos. 39 and 40 derive from the 1959 Vienna sessions, while the “Jupiter” used here is the 1961 recording with the Wiener Symphoniker.

What are DSD and DXD?
