Berlioz: Symphonie fantastique with Eugene Ormandy

Eugene Ormandy conducts The Philadelphia Orchestra in Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, Op. 14, one of the defining scores of orchestral Romanticism. Across five movements, the work follows the visionary course of the Épisode de la vie d’un artiste, from the opening passion to the celebrated final witches’ sabbath.

Registrations

The stereo Columbia recording of Symphonie fantastique with Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra was released in 1961; the session is dated December 14, 1960. The original stereo edition listed the timings of the five movements and was issued in parallel in mono.

Eugene Ormandy and The Philadelphia Orchestra

The long partnership between Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra represents one of the central chapters of twentieth-century American orchestral recording history. In Berlioz, the ensemble’s precision and the orchestra’s tonal richness support the score’s narrative construction.

What are DSD and DXD?

DSD (Direct Stream Digital) is a 1-bit digital encoding system based on pulse-density modulation. DSD64 operates at about 2.8 MHz, DSD128 at about 5.6 MHz and DSD256 at about 11.2 MHz. Playback requires a DAC or player compatible with the selected DSD rate.

DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) is an ultra-high-resolution PCM format; in the version offered here it operates at 352.8kHz. Developed also as a professional editing and post-production environment for ultra-high-resolution workflows, it requires a compatible DAC or player.
