Ninni Arini comes from Sicily. And he is a singer-songwriter.
With these two sentences, we can already have a fairly clear idea of his poetry and his music. Today it is not common to meet artists like Ninni Arini: artists who stand out for their ability to perpetuate a great Italian tradition, which originates far back in time.
What immediately strikes you are the lyrics, never trivial, never predictable, speaking of land, wind, sea, and life, without ever falling into banality, without ever combining the word "love" with the word "heart", as too much recent Italian music has accustomed us to hearing. "E se il mare", "I poeti", "Regina della Sera", the beautiful "Un oceano di carte" tell stories in which everyone can find a piece of themselves.
And then the music. This is an album with very few instruments. Two guitars, a double bass, a small percussion set, and a flugelhorn, and then a piano and a cello: all played live, thus managing to recreate the emotion of a sunny and very Mediterranean sound. It is music that in many ways literally allows you to breathe the sea air of Marsala, where Ninni comes from and where Ninni lives.
In this first album for Velut Luna, Ninni also wanted to pay homage to two great Italian authors of the past, Fabrizio De Andrè and Luigi Tenco, offering three so-called covers of rare intensity, but above all of rare interpretative originality: that is, making these songs his own. And so here is an unprecedented "Bocca di rosa" in a swing key, a heartfelt "Tu non hai capito niente" and an affectionate "Ragazzo mio".
At the end of the album, there's a surprise, which should remain a surprise: so you'll have to discover it by listening to the album carefully...
