LIKEWISE | Julian Mazzariello, Enzo Pietropaoli

LIKEWISE brings Julian Mazzariello on piano and Enzo Pietropaoli on double bass together as a duo for the first time. The album grew out of recordings made at the Piaggio Auditorium, inside the Piaggio Museum in Pontedera, for the 2019 Piaggio fonè Music Festival.

International standards, works by Ornette Coleman and Miles Davis, and two originals by Mazzariello and Pietropaoli become a continuous conversation between piano and double bass, shaped by the natural timbre and spatial definition associated with fonè productions.

• 33 rpm LP — LP153: transparent 180 g virgin vinyl, Pure Analogue Recording, Pure Analogue Cutting, One-Stage Pressing Process, tube-processed analogue master, heavy-quality sleeve and a limited edition of 496 copies. This edition was pressed in Japan; the “Made in Japan” sticker visible on the cover applies only to the LP variant. The LP purchase includes a complimentary File Hi-Res.

Recording and mastering

The session used an analogue chain built around an Ampex ATR-102 with 1965 Ampex Model 351 tube electronics, 2-track, 1/2-inch, 30 ips, modified by David Manley, alongside a Pyramix digital chain with dCS A/D and D/A converters. Neumann U47, U48 and M49 tube microphones, Signoricci preamplification and cabling, and a two-microphone field-effect technique were used for the recording.

Two separate masters were created: an analogue master for vinyl and a DSD digital master for SACD. LP mastering used the fully analogue, tube-based Signoricci system without equalisation, reverb, compression or expansion.
