Notes

Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra offer a solid and authoritative reading of Brahms's First and Third Symphonies. The First presents a dramatic structure and a sense of formal maturity: the themes are intensely delineated, the Adagio radiates expressive nobility, and the finale concludes with vigor. The Third offers more intimate contrasts, mournful singing, and chiaroscuro timbres that highlight the orchestral transparency and warmth, and measured, precise phrasing.

On the second disc, Antal Dorati joins the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra in the Second Symphony, which stands out for its open cantability and luminous character, with episodes of sweet melancholy and a crystalline finale. The Fourth, again entrusted to the London Symphony Orchestra, displays a more complex and nervous texture, with tight counterpoints and a concluding movement of great energy and tension, where formal discipline and emotional momentum meet. This interpretation is overall balanced and convincing.
