Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto is one of the most iconic pieces of 20th-century classical music. First performed in Moscow in 1901 with the composer himself at the piano, it has garnered ever-increasing critical and popular success over time, even being frequently featured in the soundtracks of some of the most famous Hollywood films of the 1950s and 1960s (Rhapsody, The Seven Year Itch, etc.). This "use" has allowed this musical masterpiece to become firmly established in the collective imagination as an icon of broad-spectrum Romanticism. It has been recorded by virtually all the world's greatest performers and orchestras, although in my opinion the definitive interpretation is that of the great American pianist Van Cliburn, with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra conducted by Fritz Reiner in 1958. Velut Luna presents this unique chamber version for piano and string quartet, composed by Jeremy Liu, previously unreleased on disc. While the demanding piano part remains exactly the same as the orchestral version, the orchestral part has been adapted to the multiple expressive possibilities of the string quartet formation, offering a vision that is absolutely respectful of the original emotions, yet characterized by different colors and surprising agility and freshness.
