Notes

The title “LIGHT & DARK” refers to the juxtaposition of different genres of music between the “light and the serious”, a multifaceted percussive abstract between sounds of nature, dance, folklore, legends and the severe sound architectures from JS Bach to the present day. In the CD “LIGHT” you can appreciate the “Scherzi del Vento” Wind Sketch II by the Japanese Keiko Abe often inspired in her music by the events of nature. Cadença per Berimbau by Ney Rosauro focused on the African stringed instrument of percussion used in Brazil in the acrobatic dance Capoeira. Afro-Amero by Phil Faini characterized by the deep roots in the percussion of the 6/8 rhythms of the African Yoruba tribe. The pleasant arrangements of Birdland by Joseph Zawinul, ex-Weather Report and Why not! by the virtuoso pianist of Puerto Rican origin Michael Camilo follow. With Ney Rosauro's Mitos Brasilerios we immerse ourselves in Brazilian mysteries and legends with the narration of his bizarre characters represented by rhythms, sounds and instruments that are ever so multicolored. At the end of the CD we listen to the solo jazz drums accompanied by a small percussion orchestra in John Beck's Drum Concerto. The CD "DARK" instead presents a program with a strong classical and contemporary imprint. It begins with the sound architecture of JS Bach in this Prelude in the atypical version for two marimbas; we continue with the spatialized timbric interpenetrations of sound tubes, glasses and vibraphone of Mimesis, a piece composed for the Ensemble by Giovanni Bonato, and with the unique experience of Lou Harrison, in 1942, he experiments with references to Javanese music with sounds obtained from recovered objects such as availabilities, disc brakes, watch and truck springs... To follow: Metal-mente a serial piece for vibraphone and percussive metallophones rubbed with curious but effective modalities, dedicated to Edoardo Gioachini to the Ensemble; Kecak "the dance of the chattering monkeys" by the Japanese Akira Nishimura, inspired by one of the dramaturgies of the island of Bali and based on four sequences that intertwine like a rhythmic belt coupled with a pair of timpani and vibraphone that develop a dialogue similar to the Indian Raga. It concludes with a “live” version of Edgard Varèse's Ionisation for thirteen players, defined by Curt Sachs as “the greatest rhythmic inspiration ever composed”, an absolute masterpiece, completed in 1932, characterised by an incessant explosion of fantasy and timbral creativity within traditional construction elements.
