CLASSICAL FROM 20th CENTURY : original compositions by Astor Piazzolla, Pepito Ros, Gustavo Toker. Modern Saxophone Quartet / Simone Zanchini, accordeon 24Bit / 96 kHz Digital Recording. Live in studio at Chiuppano Public Auditorium (Vicenza, Italy) May, 2000. VLHD REMASTERED, May, 2008
We at Velut Luna consider this album one of our hidden gems.
With this “Imagenes de Tango” begins a work of rediscovery of some of the titles that we love the most and that present contents of absolute musical importance.
In this project, the prestigious Modern Saxophone Quartet, composed of 4 classical saxophonists, hosts as soloist the great and highly acclaimed bandoneon soloist Simone Zanchini, in the performance of some classics by Astor Piazzola, using original arrangements, composed for the occasion.
Another very important aspect of this performance should also be underlined, namely the fact that it was performed strictly live, even without an audience, in the splendid acoustics of the Auditorium of Chiuppano, in the province of Vicenza. This is something that we all care a lot about. A nice and significant curiosity of our approach: the pieces Oblivion and Libertango (tracks 10 and 11) are actually joined together in a sort of mini suite and the “glue” is a long cadence (a long “solo”) of the bandoneon. At a certain point there is a small imperfection in the performance – a small off-key note – underlined by a line of disapproval from Zanchini: now, we could obviously have corrected it, but by will of Zanchini himself it was decided to leave it as evidence of a freshness in the performance that no perfection with the “editing scent” could ever give to the music.
Last but not least, the remastering work carried out is of interest. The now well-known VLHD technology has been applied, which “limits itself”, so to speak with great euphemism, to using the most sophisticated signal decimation algorithms available today, not separated from a very precise and proprietary control of the digital clock.
So even those who have already purchased this disc would now have a good reason to buy it again, thus being able to have the opportunity to verify directly at home, in a direct comparison, how important and how much digital technology has evolved in the service of the standard CD in recent years.
