Antonio Buzzolla was born in Adria in 1815 and died in Venice in 1871. Son of an artist (his father Angelo was the choirmaster of the Cathedral of Adria and director of the Philharmonic Society), he learned to play the violin, piano, organ and other instruments early on, and at the age of 17 he joined the orchestra of the “La Fenice” theatre in Venice; 5 years later, after having already composed and performed his first short opera, “Ferramondo”, he moved to Naples where he was a pupil of Donizetti and Mercadante.
After composing and performing two other operas, “Mastino I della Scala” in 1841 and “Gli avventurieri” in 1842, in 1843 he undertook a long journey through Europe, going first to Berlin as director of the orchestra of the Teatro dell'Opera Italiana, then to Dresden, Poland and Russia; in 1845 and 1846 we find him occasionally in Adria, then going to Paris as director of the Opera Italienne, and later again to Berlin.
From 1848 he settled permanently in Venice, where he held the prestigious position of choirmaster at the Basilica of San Marco from 1855 until his death in 1871.
In addition to the three operas already mentioned, Buzzolla composed and performed two other operas, “Amleto” in 1848 and “Elisabetta di Valois” in 1849-1850; the rest of his impressive musical production is largely made up of sacred music, even if his fame is mainly linked to vocal chamber music: in fact, he also wrote a notable quantity of arias and canzonettas, many of which in Venetian dialect, for voice and piano, which met with considerable favour among the Italian public.
Rossini himself declared that Buzzolla surpassed in this genre all those who had preceded him, including Perucchini and Simone Mayr, authors of the very famous “Biondina in gondoleta”.
In fact, the Venetian ariettas and canzonettas, while retaining the popular aspect in the text and in certain rhythmic cadences and melodic traits, show considerable care in the composition: these are pages of chamber music "full of vivacity, variety, spontaneity, Venetian flavour" but also of good taste, skill and compositional mastery, "little gems expertly harmonised" as Antonio Casellati, a pioneer of musical studies in Adria, defined them.
This disc offers a significant collection of joyful arias and songs, splendidly interpreted by Paola Marzolla and Matteo Ferrara, accompanied by the solid piano playing of Aldo Fiorentin. Recorded live-in-studio in high digital resolution in the now famous Magister Area Studios by Marco Lincetto.
