Giuseppe Nicolini (1762-1842), a musician from Piacenza, carried out his musical activity over a period of almost fifty years between the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century.
His artistic production touched on all musical genres and alongside the melodramatic repertoire, by far the most important, there are compositions for orchestra, sacred music and a significant production of instrumental and vocal chamber music.
Nicolini enjoyed great popularity during his lifetime, above all thanks to his theatrical career which saw him triumph in the main European theatres.
Nicolini's "ariette" number around thirty, handed down in manuscript and printed sources, most of which are preserved in the Archive of the Dukes of Bourbon at the Palatina Library in Parma, confirming the fact that these pieces were performed in the musical academies organised at the court of Parma and Piacenza.
The "ariette" are generally grouped in homogeneous cycles, but they also circulated isolated with piano or guitar accompaniment.
Love in all its nuances is the central theme of Nicolini's "ariettes". All the strings are touched: from the sweet and slow serenade, to the lament for the sufferings of love, to the brilliant aria. Each composition is a small painting in itself with its own particular character.
From a musical point of view, they are all compositions in the traditional form of the aria with da capo, with a contrasting central section, both in character and in tonal structure.
The vocal part is fluid and accurate; it uses a simple phrasing that emerges on an accompaniment generally made with repeated or arpeggiated chords. Sometimes the vocal inflections tend to underline poetic images expressed in the text.
These arias are part of that panorama of chamber opera which tends to acquire more and more autonomy, detaching itself from the opera aria and creating that genre of salon romance which will see its culmination in the operas of Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi and Tosti.
