A consolidated tradition of the nineteenth century was the "paraphrase" of the great symphonic and operatic themes for piano or small chamber ensembles, such as the classic violin, cello and piano trio present in this selection. The aim was obviously to bring music for large ensembles into private homes, in an era in which the great mass media such as radio, television and records themselves evidently did not exist.
