I was 12 and a half years old when my piano teacher, Elisa Cannavacciuolo, told me literally “go to Ricordi and buy Beethoven's Sonata 13”. The shopkeeper, not knowing whether the 13 referred to the sonata number or the number of opera, he sold me both scores; opus 13 is the Pathetic and number 13 is op. 27 no. 1. First contact established! With only three years of study behind me these two scores first aroused in me absolute desperation, but at the same time they further fueled the flame that the composer from Bonn himself had first lit in me.
Well yes! Beethoven represented the first spark for me. Returning to these sonatas as an adult was like returning for a while to the house of origin, enjoying once again the delicious dish of Sunday lunch together with the very pleasant sensation of being enveloped in fire, enthusiasm, passion , impetus with the paternal embrace of the passing years.
