PRODUCT DESCRIPTION
Among the many editions of Verdi's Requiem, we consider this radio recording by Ferenc Fricsay, made in Berlin in 1960, to be one of the most sublime, profound, and moving ever produced. It is obviously far removed from the "Italian" vision of a Toscanini or a Serafin, but at the same time it has nothing in common with a late-Romantic interpretation of the Brucknerian type. Instead, it is a sort of grandiose epicedium of immeasurable grandeur, which in other respects achieves Dante's pathos through the sense of apocalypse and resignation, without any fideistic or eschatological hope. It is one of the few authentic cases in which the conductor's vision lives up to the composer's mysterious conception.
