Little biographical information is available about Dietrich Steffkins. We know that he worked during the height of solo music and was considered an extraordinary virtuoso on the viola da gamba. His compositions are collected in several collections, along with the works of other musicians, and still lack full discovery. The purpose of this CD is to document the compositional practice of an artist who still offers great expressive possibilities today through his research and use of the viola in its various forms.
