Herbert Kegel and the MDR Symphony Orchestra offer an intense and visionary reading of Shostakovich's Symphony No. 7, "Leningrad," here recorded live. The opening Allegretto rises like a majestic sonic fresco, with the famous march building inexorably, a symbol of resistance and determination. The Moderato offers a more intimate feel, with shadows and chiaroscuro instilling a sense of unease. The Adagio unfolds a profound, almost suspended lyricism, in which memory and pain intertwine. In the finale, Allegro non troppo, energy and tension merge in a dramatic epilogue. A performance full of pathos, precision, and evocative power.
