This album also benefits from the financial contribution of the LPM PROJECT, born from an act of private patronage and aimed at supporting the professional launch of excellent young people among graduates and undergraduates from the State Music Conservatories of Veneto.
Kenny Dorham (unlike his almost contemporary Miles Davis) is often categorized as an underrated musician, despite a very intense career; in fact, especially in his last period - he died in 1972 - he did not have an easy life.
However, an aspect that characterizes and ennobles the figure of KD (as he is called by jazz musicians) is his activity as a composer: he wrote over sixty pieces, all interesting, articulate, and sometimes very lyrical. Many of his compositions have become part of the contemporary jazz repertoire, and this CD is proof of that.
The energy and creativity of Lorenzo, Marcello, Martino, and Marco demonstrate how it is possible to give an absolutely contemporary and timeless version of KD's compositions while fully respecting the author's original idea. Long live KD!
Pietro Tonolo
When we were offered the opportunity to create a tribute to Kenny Dorham's music, we embraced it with enthusiasm and curiosity. The resulting work is the product of our many experiences as a group (shared both academically and artistically) and our musical background, from which we drew inspiration in reinterpreting a repertoire imbued with fascinating colors and sounds. In fact, we chose the compositions closest to our sensibility, in some cases deviating from the trumpeter's original idea.
Afrocentric sonorities, blues reminiscences, and delicate lyricism find their common denominator in the typical elements of bebop, providing us with rich material to work with without distorting its essence. Undertaking a monographic work on a prolific author like KD was a stimulating opportunity: collaborating on a recording project in a period when encounters are rare represented a challenge for us, testing us to create an album that was as faithful as possible to a live performance.
