Johnny Cash was a country legend even during his lifetime, although, or perhaps precisely because of this, he was very different from the numerous country singers in plaid shirts. When he performed, he chose to dress in black as a symbol of solidarity with the oppressed and those without rights. His outlaw image was as convincing as the boom-tiddy-boom train sound of his rhythm section, which lent its typical sound to many of his 500 songs.
At the peak of his career, Cash (who himself had committed some minor offenses) had the idea of singing and playing for criminals behind prison walls for free. Initially, his proposal to commercialize the live recording was rejected, but eventually, his record label decided to release the album "At Folsom Prison." Encouraged by the success of his prison recording, Columbia Records released "At San Quentin" shortly after. The recording, in which Cash and his band were frantically applauded more or less at the end of every verse, exceeded all expectations. Even today, Cash fans consider it the best live recording of the "man in black."
