Janos Starker - Antal Dorati | Dvorak: Violincello Concerto - Bruch: Kol Nidrei ( SPC90303 )

Speakers Corner - LP AUDIOPHILE PRESSING 180g

Antonín Dvorák: Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in B Minor, op. 104 / Max Bruch: Kol Nidrei, op. 47 - Janos Starker (vc) and the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Antal Dorati

The exceptional success of our release of Bach's Cello Suites performed by Janos Starker has encouraged us to follow up with a no less important interpretation of Dvorák's Cello Concerto by the Hungarian virtuoso. Starker approaches this concerto with astonishing confidence; the technical difficulties encountered by others in its performance appear unfamiliar to him. The purity of timbre, even in the feared upper register and cadenzas, remains intact, allowing one to fully concentrate on the meditative magic of the music.
Janos Starker found valuable colleagues in Antal Dorati and the London Symphony Orchestra. The conductor and soloist set a benchmark in their concert teamwork, as in this performance, the emphasis is not so much on the often-lamented emulation as on interpretation. Rather, the two protagonists engage in a chamber-like interpretation, distinguished by the orchestra's dynamically moderate intonation and the soloist's supple timbre throughout the piece.
An always welcome encore is found on side two with Bruch's "Kol Nidrei," performed with verve and a good dose of romantic, poignant sweetness that allows this evergreen to thrive.
