The music of CPE Bach paved the way for musicians who came after him and represents the bridge between Baroque and Classical music. The Sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord were written at the court of Frederick II, when the viola da Gamba was becoming an increasingly rare instrument in many countries. Also in the service of the King of Prussia was J.J. Quantz, who in his treatise provides valuable guidance on playing speed; guidance that we have attempted to adopt and follow here, as valuable testimonies of the period.
The music of CPE Bach showed the way to other great musicians who came after him and links baroque to classicism. The three Sonatas for viola da gamba and harpsichord were composed during his period at the court of Frederick the Great, when the use of the viola da gamba was becoming increasingly less common in many countries. At the service of the King of Prussia was also JJ Quantz who gave valuable indications on the speed of performance that we have tried to adopt and follow as precious, reliable testimonies of that epoch.
