Obwohl der Klang der ursprünglichste, alogischste und instinktivste Bestandteil der Musik ist, hatten die Komponisten bis zum 18. Jahrhundert anderen Kompositionselementen den Vorrang gegeben. Die neue Aufmerksamkeit für den \"Klang an sich\" beförderte die Transformation der Ausführungstechniken der Streicher und die Suche nach originellen Klangfarben im Orchester, die Perfektionierung traditioneller und neu erfundener Instrumente sowie die Aufwertung alter, aber geschichtsträchtiger Instrumente wie der Harfe. Hinter der modernen Harfe, die 1811 von Sebastian Erard erfunden wurde und über 47 Saiten und 7 Pedale verfügt, lässt sich leicht das Instrument erkennen, dessen Ursprünge im Mythos verschwimmen und das wir, mit positivistischer Gesinnung, bis zu den ersten Anwendungen des Homo faber zurückverfolgen können.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIm Laufe des romantischen 19. Jahrhunderts, vorzugsweise im französischen Raum – schon an der Schwelle zur Revolution war die Harfe das Lieblingsinstrument von Königin Marie Antoinette – erleben wir die progressive Integration der Harfe in den Orchesterapparat, die durch Hector Berlioz’ Abhandlung besiegelt wurde. Gleichzeitig etablierte sich die Verwendung der Harfe im Operntheater, wie das raffinierte Klanggemisch der Meditation aus Jules Massenets (1842 – 1912) Thaïs bezeugt. Eindrucksvolle und faszinierende Spuren der Opernwelt finden sich in den Kompositionen von Giovanni Caramiello (1838 – 1938), viele Jahre lang gefeierter Harfenist des Teatro S. Carlo in Neapel, Autor eines Duetts über Bellinis Casta Diva, für Harfe und Klavier, hier in der Transkription für Soloharfe von Davide Burani.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDie Nutzung der Harfe gipfelt in Claude Debussys (1862 – 1918) sinfonischem Werk, das oft zwei Harfen in der Partitur verwendet und ausgiebig Glissandi einsetzt, um einen impressionistischen Klang zu erzeugen. Die Danses sacrée et profane wurden 1904 von der Firma Pleyel in Auftrag gegeben, die ein neues Modell der „chromatischen“ Harfe bewerben wollte, um mit der bereits erwähnten diatonischen Harfe, einem Monopol der Firma Erard, zu konkurrieren. Das neue Instrument konnte sich nicht durchsetzen, aber Debussys Danses können glücklicherweise dank der Transkription von Henriette Renié, einer berühmten französischen Dozentin und Konzertmeisterin, auf der Pedalharfe aufgeführt werden. Seit der Uraufführung am 6. November 1904 bei den Concerts Colonne in Paris haben die Danses ein Referenzmodell für europäische Komponisten geschaffen, dessen Einfluss vergleichbar ist mit dem des Adagietto aus Mahlers Fünfter von 1902, das in dem eigenständigen Stück Sospiri op. 70, 1914 für Streicher und Harfe vom englischen Komponisten Sir Edward Elgar (1857 – 1934) komponiert, wieder aufgegriffen wird, dem einige Eckpfeiler der spätromantischen Streichorchesterliteratur zu verdanken sind.
